The Cupertino-based tech giant is hosting a conference, which will take place from 10:30 p.m. onwards on Monday, June 9, 2025. This Worldwide Developers Conference, referred to as WWDC, will be a four-day event, and is expected to focus primarily on renaming OS.

It is expected that Apple will remove the version numbers of its different operating systems and rename them by year. However, it is also heard that the company will be employing +1 strategy approach, that is, the operating system that introduced after September this year, will be named not as 25 but as 26. This change is expected to have an impact on all Apple operating systems. Thus, OS will be renamed to iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, etc.

Why the Change?

It is reported that Apple is adopting this new naming strategy with the aim of improving clarity and consistency. That is, earlier users sparked genuine confusion regarding the cross-functionality with different Apple devices. For example, will watchOS 11 pair easily with iOS 18? This kind of confusion will get easily vanished with the introduction of the new naming system.

With the arrival of the year-based naming system, users can easily identify which versions belong to the same generation. Software Providers like Microsoft and Adobe had introduced this naming convention earlier, with the aim of understanding its generation and compatibility window.

What to Expect, More than Renaming?

It is rumored that this year's WWDC  will witness the introduction of a new UI across all its operating systems. This new design language, codenamed as “Solarium” draws inspiration from visionOS. It is likely to be the combination of digital glass effects and more use of light and transparency. Some other changes on toolbars, app icons, and buttons can also be expected.

Moreover, as the new AI-powered Siri requires further testing and improvements, a significant change to Siri is unlikely to be announced at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference.

We can expect a new feature in Apple Vision Pro, which is a new support for eye scrolling.

Another introduction that may happen at WWDC 2025, is the launch of an application that is completely dedicated to Gaming. This application will serve as a central hub for game discovery and will have social features and Apple Arcade integration.

According to Bloomberg, we can expect some considerable changes in the Phone, Camera, and Safari apps.

A big announcement that is unlikely to happen on June 9th, the Worldwide Developers Conference, and may happen later in the year is a hardware announcements. There will be more than 100 technical sessions and labs during this 4-day event.

WWDC: Where to Watch?

The event will be held at Apple Park in Cupertino from 10.30 PM (Indian time). The live streaming of the event can be watched on YouTube or on the Official Apple website, or on its App. For those who wish to watch the playback of the event, it will be available once the program ends.
